AI can make mistakes: why media literacy matters more than ever

October 24, 2025. Artificial intelligence is making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and false content, as generative models can invent quotes, data, and sources in convincing ways. These “hallucinations” are not anomalies but part of how the systems function, posing serious risks to public opinion, journalism, and democracy. This is why UNESCO launched the “AI Can Make Mistakes” campaign, calling for stronger critical thinking and media literacy. A joint effort is needed: more aware citizens, more responsible platforms, and more transparent developers. True protection lies in human ability to evaluate, verify, and avoid passively accepting what AI produces.

New Mexico’s Path to Universal, No-CostChildcare

Excerpted from When a State Leads Boldly by Stephanie Brueck-Cassoli, courtesy Ascend at the Aspen Institute.

October 14, 2025 – The Challenge: Making High-Quality Childcare Accessible

This fall, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that New Mexico would become the first state to provide no-cost universal childcare. And yes, truly universal and no-cost for all New Mexicans, along with a recommended wage floor of $18/hour for childcare providers. The early childhood education sector nationwide still faces real challenges; the cost of childcare has risen to prohibitive levels for families and wages are not rising to match the demand on the sector. But when no-cost universal childcare officially starts on November 1, 2025, it will bring hope and momentum for children and families in New Mexico and across the country. How did New Mexico get to this milestone and what does this mean for families in New Mexico? World Economic Forum – Forum Stories - Already a Multi-Trillion-Dollar Market: CEO Guide to Growth in the Green Economy

December 2, 2025 - Despite recent headlines suggesting the climate transition is stalling, overall growth in green investments has not wavered. Worth over $5 trillion per year – the green economy is the world’s most dynamic growth sector after technology. Green revenues are growing twice as fast as conventional revenues on average and companies operating in these markets typically gain access to cheaper capital and often enjoy premium valuations on capital markets. Last year’s annual report for CEO Climate Leaders addressed the steep cost of climate inaction. This year’s report reminds readers that the green economy is one of the biggest growth opportunities on the planet. Nonetheless, succeeding in the green economy is not always easy. Winning companies accelerate growth by rigorously pushing for technology maturity and bringing down costs of nascent technologies, shaping and navigating regulation, and accessing smart capital. (…)

Well-managed emerging economies could be a vital buffer against the economic shocks and imbalances caused by the current geopolitical jockeying. (...) Traditional competition policy-making – designed to ensure market efficiency, level the playing field and improve consumer welfare – has given way to state-directed measures serving the objectives of national security and economic dominance. This transition comes with a $3 trillion price tag across major economies. World Diabetes Day

November 14, 2025 – This World Diabetes Day, we recognize the importance of access to medical care in Gaza and the West Bank.Amid the devastation of the conflict in Gaza, many residents face a compounded risk, struggling with not only the impacts of the war, but also with untreated chronic illness. Diabetes is extremely prevalent in the West Bank and Gaza, affecting more than 15 percent of Palestine’s population compared to a worldwide average of six percent. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, as of 2024, more than 71,000 people live with diabetes in Gaza. Due to blockades and restrictions on aid and supplies, Gaza suffers from a critical shortage of life-saving medicines, including insulin. The devastation affecting Gaza’s health infrastructure has put thousands of people in Gaza at risk of uncontrolled diabetes, which can lead to potentially fatal health complications like kidney failure, stroke and heart disease. Delivering medical aid to help ensure that even the most vulnerable receive proper healthcare remains one of Anera’s core missions. With the support of our medical donation partners, we distribute vital medical treatments and treat patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes at our and partner clinics. (…)

World Mental Health Day: ADRA Mongolia Builds Youth Resilience Before Crisis

October 10, 2025 – Every year on World Mental Health Day, the global community shines a light on the urgent need for accessible mental health care—especially in crises and emergencies, when stress, uncertainty, and loss take their greatest toll. While not all young people live through conflict or disaster, many face invisible crises of their own—loneliness, pressure, and anxiety that can quietly erode their well-being. In Mongolia, ADRA’s NextGen CELEBRATIONS! project is helping adolescents build resilience and emotional strength long before emergencies arise, empowering them with tools that protect both body and mind. Worldwide, 1 in 7 children and adolescents aged 10–19 experience a mental health condition. Yet many never receive the care they need due to barriers such as limited services, high costs, or stigma. Anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorders are among the most common challenges, and globally, suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15–20-year-olds. Half of all mental health conditions begin before the age of 18, according to the World Health Organization. These statistics underscore the urgency of early prevention and access to care—two goals at the heart of ADRA’s NextGen CELEBRATIONS! Mongolia project, a dynamic three-year initiative that serves as a pilot of ADRA International’s global non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention approach. Non-communicable diseases include long-lasting conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers, and mental health disorders. (…)

Manufacturing the world's tiniest light-emitting diodes

(by Daniel Meierhans)

November 25, 2025 - Miniaturisation ranks as the driving force behind the semiconductor industry. The tremendous gains in computer performance since the 1950s are largely due to the fact that ever smaller structures can be manufactured on silicon chips. Why rebuild?

October 3, 2025. Heritage conservation stems from the need to protect buildings seen as essential to cultural identity, often threatened by industrialization and abandonment. Reconstruction after wars or disasters is an act of trust in the future, yet the result is always a new building that develops its own history. The extent of damage, the time elapsed, and the techniques available deeply influence the meaning and value of each reconstruction. Moreover, every intervention fits into a complex urban, social, and political context, making differences from the original monument inevitable. Reconstructions should be understood as symbolic reparations, reminding us of the importance of preventing future destruction.
