Renewable companies see remarkable progress in improving human rights

(by Ketan Joshi)

September 17, 2025 – (…) The ‘Renewable Energy & Human Rights Benchmark’, published by the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC), The 2025 edition, released on Wednesday, shows that “the renewables sector is making significant progress on embedding human rights into its operations, despite the challenging environment created by adverse government policies (notably in the USA), high interest and inflation costs”. The report’s authors put this down to two factors. First, a recognition among the companies that rampant human rights abuses in the renewable sector will only slow down the transition and weaken their businesses. And pre-emptive company policy change in advance of new European Union regulations. (…) Happily, 85% of companies improved or maintained their scores. (…)

Generation Z: digital natives between social media and fake news

September 26, 2025- Generation Z, which has grown up with smartphones and social media, has been exposed to the risk of online misinformation since childhood. According to a recent survey by the Toniolo Institute's Youth Observatory and Parole O_Stili, 51% of young people get their information mainly from social media, where fake news spreads rapidly. In addition, 31% like unverified news items, unwittingly contributing to their circulation. The current challenge is to provide young people with the tools and skills to recognize and combat fake news, demonstrating that targeted interventions can strengthen critical thinking and the ability to distinguish reliable content.

Jonathan Livingston seagull: symbol of freedom and inner search

September 25, 2025- Published in 1970 by Richard Bach, Jonathan Livingston Seagull tells the story of a seagull who defies the rules of his flock to pursue his dream of flying higher and freer. Inspired by an aerobatic pilot from the 1930s, the novel has become an icon of freedom and the search for one's true self, sparking debate and different interpretations across generations: from positive thinking to anarchy, from Masonic to Catholic spirituality, to the point of being considered a precursor of New Age culture. World Economic Forum - The futures of european migration

September 28, 2025 - Migration has become a critical political issue in Europe due to declining fertility rates and the need for strategic independence. European leaders are increasingly calling for both low- and high-skilled immigration to address the continent's demographic challenges, which include a projected population decline and a rapidly aging populace. As Europe seeks to attract skilled workers, particularly from the US, it faces the dual challenge of managing migration amid rising political tensions. Long-term planning is essential, emphasizing the need for migration as the primary solution to combat workforce shortages and ensure economic stability.

World Economic Forum - Sustainable finance in 2025: These are the key sectors redefining global markets

September 24, 2025 - Sustainable finance is becoming mainstream, with significant capital flows into food systems, nature, industry, and infrastructure. Debt issuance surpassed $1 trillion in 2024, and private nature finance has increased over elevenfold since 2020, driven by risks from extreme weather and resource insecurity. Key sectors are emerging, such as regenerative agriculture, which saw climate finance rise over 300% since 2019. Opportunities in nature finance are projected at $10 trillion by 2030, while industrial decarbonization remains challenging, needing $1.6 trillion despite only $250 billion mobilized. Action is essential for leaders to capture early market advantages.

Can the power of kindness extend life?

October 9, 2025- Kindness has an extraordinary impact on personal and collective well-being. Even small acts of kindness, if repeated consistently, can improve quality of life: according to numerous studies, just five acts of kindness per week for at least six weeks are enough to achieve tangible benefits. These include an increase in serotonin and dopamine (neurotransmitters associated with pleasure), an increase in oxytocin (the hormone associated with emotional bonds), a reduction in blood pressure, and a general increase in feelings of happiness and joy.

These inmates are finding meaning by saving orphaned and injured animals

October 2025- The Ohio Wildlife Center’s hospital sends critters to five facilities for care before eventual release. Hidden behind brick walls and barbed-wire fences on the outskirts of a small Ohio town, an aviary no bigger than a single-car garage contains rows of wall-to-wall birdcages separated by species—swallows, blue jays, robins, cardinals and finches. A gravel-bottom enclosure holds ducklings. Cages outside the aviary house small mammals. The aviary has a narrow duck pond in the back and a plywood square painted with the portrait of a coyote hanging on the front door. Inside, 71-year-old Willie H. uses plastic tweezers to feed moistened dog food pellets to juvenile robins through the bars of their cage. Like every day, he does this with his pet cockatiel, Bird, on his shoulder. The makeshift aviary he’s spent the past 20 years working in is within the confines of the Marion Correctional Institution, where he’s serving a potential life sentence. The Ohio Wildlife Center has been sending injured and orphaned wildlife to Marion for rehabilitation since the 1990s. According to Brittany Jordan, the center’s wildlife rehabilitation operational director, these behind-bars rehab centers are now in five prisons across the state, and more institutions are joining the program as a way to help both the inmates and the animals.

Over 600 North Korean refugees can tell their stories after public speaking classes from Us charity

October 2025-In the bustling heart of Seoul, a transformative journey unfolds for over 600 North Korean refugees, as they find their voice through public speaking, thanks to an organization named Freedom Speakers International (FSI). Founded by Casey Latrigue Jr. and Eunkoo Lee, FSI offers more than language lessons-it's a sanctuary where stories of survival and hope are alchemized into powerful narratives of change. The speeches reveal a profound yearning for freedom, and a complex blend of raising awareness, advocating for sanctions, storytelling, healing personal wounds, and building self-confidence. Each refugee carries not just a personal history but a collective tale of resilience, exploring the eternal struggle against silence and oppression. As the refugees stand to speak, they not only reclaim their stories from the shadows but also weave a tapestry of courage that challenges the world's conscience. The core themes of resilience and liberation echo loudly, reminding us that the voice is the bridge between isolation and community, a tool that is as transformative as it is liberating. [...]

Watu’s 2024 sustainability report shows growing electric motorcycle financing landscape in Africa

October 15, 2025 - The motorcycle sector is a key pillar of the African transport landscape, especially in East, Central, and West Africa, where motorcycle taxis provide transport for millions of people everyday. Estimates say there are around 30 million internal combustion engine motorcycles in Africa serving nations across the last mile logistics and taxi sectors. A combination of factors, including the access of conventional financing mechanisms for the underbanked and potential consumers not meeting lending requirements for traditional asset financing, as well as the relatively small upfront purchase prices for ICE motorcycles compared to larger vehicles such as cars, presented an interesting and viable opportunity for innovative asset financing. World Economic Forum – Finance Solutions for Nature: Pathways to Returns and Outcomes

September 10, 2025 - Nature is rapidly emerging as a strategic investment frontier and more institutional capital is flowing into new business models. (…) Markets still struggle to consistently reward positive nature outcomes. Unlike climate finance, which has advanced rapidly through decades of policy alignment, nature’s challenges are starker – it remains underpriced, undervalued and underfinanced. (…) Nature finance will not scale up through one “perfect” solution. A flexible toolkit that deploys a wide spread of solutions is essential to shift markets. Moving from a fragmented landscape of transactions to mature global markets will depend on scaling-up the best of both worlds: the familiarity and liquidity of general-purpose finance combined with the outcome credibility of nature-specific models that deliver positive results for ecosystems.
